Swim Lesson Information
Level 1: Focus is on the fundamentals of water safety and swimming. Children learn how to safely enter and exit the pool, how to blow bubbles out of their nose underwater, float on their front and back without assistance and do bobs. Bobs focus on fully submerging underwater, touching the bottom with their feet, then jumping back up. They will begin to learn freestyle arms. Typical age is 3 and up and children must be fully potty trained. Mastery of all skills (except freestyle arms) is necessary to move up to level 2.
What to Expect: When a young child starts swimming lessons for the first time, they may cry, scream, be nervous or scared. These are all normal reactions that our instructors are prepared for and expect. We are initially strangers to your child which can be scary, especially for young children, When starting the first day, if they are more comfortable sitting on the edge of the pool and watching that is okay! We want your child to feel safe by the water, not pressured, as pressure can sometimes instill a fear of the water. Our goal is to get your child comfortable around the water first so they may begin learning skills to build confidence and be safe in the water.
Lebel 2: Focus is on taking the skills already mastered and building upon them. Children will work on freestyle arms (AKA front crawl) while learning to pull with their head underwater. Once they have grasped this the side breath will be introduced. In order to move to level 3 children must be able to swim freestyle with their face in the water unassisted.
Level 3: Focus is on taking the fundamental skills learned in level 2 and applying them initially to freestyle and backstrokes. Children will continue to learn side breath and how to incorporate it within each stroke. From there the basics of backstroke like the arms and rotation of the shoulders will be taught and practiced. Next children will begin to learn the breaststroke by first learning the kick which is similar to a frog kick. Then, the full stoke will be finished off with how the arms pull and move in order to glide through the water. Finally, they will learn how to properly tread water with both arms and legs in deep water.
